How exactly does the Windows Updates process work?

When installing updates from MyPing is it a direct download from Microsoft, does it simply use the same process as i downloading and installing directly from the machine?

The quick answer is; yes, “as I downloading and installing directly from the computer”
My Ping App checks WSUS and SCCM (if client present) for deployed updates.
for SCCM it is very simple, MPA checks client’s CCM_SoftwareUpdate class for deployed updates and then allows you to install them thru invoking the installation methods. And you can trigger or re-trigger multiple updates on multiple computers at the same time. It does the same thing as you would got to software center and installed updates from there manually.

for WSUS is a bit different. MPA initiates update searcher based on environment configurations. if you have a group policy that directs client to an Update server, MPA will check just that. If you have WSUS server, but you do not redirect clients and is allowed. MPA will also check available updates from Microsoft Update services. It is a same experience as you would go and do “Check for Updates”
